Accelerator mass spectrometry and its applications
نویسنده
چکیده
The state of the art in accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) is reviewed. The review is divided in two parts. The first covers the general methodology, followed by its specific elaborations for the commonly measured long-lived isotopes such as 10Be, 14C, 26Al, 36Cl and 129I, as well as other isotopes with emerging applications. The second part considers the very wide spectrum of applications that now employ AMS, and groups these according to research area rather than isotope. The period up until late 1998 is covered, with an emphasis on post-1990 developments and literature. 0034-4885/99/081223+52$90.00 © 1999 IOP Publishing Ltd 1223

Accelerator Mass Spectrometry at Vera
The Vienna Environmental Research Accelerator (VERA) is a dedicated facility for accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS), operated at the University of Vienna since 1996. The principle of AMS with VERA and the advantage of measuring long-lived radioisotopes by atom counting (AMS) rather than decay counting (ß decay) is described. A brief overview on AMS applications is also presented.
متن کاملAccelerator mass spectrometry – from DNA to astrophysics
A brief review of accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) is presented. The present work touches on a few technical aspects and recent developments of AMS, and describes two specific applications of AMS, the dating of human DNA with the C bomb peak and the search for superheavy elements in nature. Since two extended general reviews on technical developments in AMS [1] and applications of AMS [2] wi...
متن کاملA gas-accepting ion source for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry: Progress and Applications
The National Ocean Sciences Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (NOSAMS) facility at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has developed an Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) system designed specifically for the analysis of C in a continuously flowing stream of carrier gas. A key part of the system is a gas-accepting microwave ion source. Recently, substantial progress has been made in the develo...
متن کاملDesign, Construction and Calibration of a Laser Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer
A time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS) developed in our laboratory at Isfahan University of Technology is described here. The TOF-MS instrument uses laser as the ionization source which provides an opportunity to investigate the ions formed in laser ablation or desorption. The TOF-MS has an ionization chamber containing an accelerator and an ion lens to focus the ions into a one meter line...
متن کاملAccelerator mass spectrometry: ultra-sensitive analysis for global science
Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) is the analytical technique of choice for the detection of long-lived radionuclides that cannot be practically analysed with decay counting or conventional mass spectrometry. AMS has been used for the analysis of C, Be, Cl and other cosmogenic radionuclides in archaeology, geology and environmental science. In addition, the ultrasensitivity of AMS is being ap...
